Forgiveness Is Not Reconciliation!

Many people have the mistaken idea that forgiveness is the same as reconciliation. This is far from the truth. Forgiveness and reconciliation are two very separate actions. Forgiveness has to do with the removal or release of a debt; reconciliation has to do with restoring friendship or harmony between two people, i.e., repairing a broken relationship. Thoughts by professional counselors Reconciliation is the offender’s responsibility and occurs when the offender recognizes his or her wrong and takes actions to correct the offending behavior (Freedman & Enright). Because reconciliation...

Letter to My Sunday School Class

When I was a kid, I believed all the Bible stories. The characters were real people, they heard from God, their world—and eventually, indirectly, mine—was changed, things happened in the spiritual dimension. But that was then; God functions quite differently in the 20th century, according to the King James Bible (Scofield’s notes said so, and they were right up there on a par with the scriptural canon). So I enjoyed the stories of Moses, Joshua, David, and Daniel. Their exploits fired my young imagination, they moved in the power of some mysterious dimension of which I had no clue. However,...

Dream: From Rooftop to Rooftop

Many years ago, I dreamed the following dream. I believe it was metaphorically depicting the nature of the journey that the Spirit of God was inviting me to. “Jump,” the Voice behind me urges. Can You Tell Me If There is a God?

I’ve been asked this question many times, in many places—hospitals, trains, cafes, homes, clinics, kitchens ——by people like Marie, a twenty-year old alcoholic, who captured my heart in a clinic in Bavaria. Emotionally scarred from severe early abuse and deprivation, Marie never let anyone hold her. Until one day…when she sat in my arms while I’m on the floor talking about my God experiences with a group of woman who wanted to hear why I knew there was a God. When I finish, Marie looks up at me with wide eyes and says, “I felt something come from you to me when you were...

Appointment in the Black Forest

It was a warm August afternoon as we strolled the streets of Bad Herrenalb. My friend and I (both of us nurses) were doing a two-week internship in a clinic nestled in the Black Forest of Germany and had taken the afternoon off. Walking into town, we intended to shop, have coffee, and enjoy this charming tourist village made famous by its hot springs. Suddenly, however, something changed. Deep within, I felt an inner urging, a stirring in my spirit, that we must return to the clinic at once. This made no sense, but I’d learned to respect these “inner promptings” of the Holy...
