Illness, loss, or failures can often engulf us if we let them. They can overtake our lives and give us a victim or invalid consciousness. But the Bible tells us that Jesus has won the victory and made it available to us.
Because of Jesus Christ, we can break free from the inner darkness that tries to take us down, and transcend whatever situations we find our self in. But it is a choice each one of us must make and it is we who must overcome. No one else an do it for us.
Battling a spirit of fear
However we are often slow to recognize that we are caught in a spiritual battle. Just a few weeks ago, I felt myself sinking into despair and depression again. For several days, I just stayed in this place. Then I realized I had let a spirit of fear get hold of me, fear of what might go wrong with my leg, fear of the future, fear of bad things happening to me again.
Once I recognized it, I could begin to break free from the stronghold it had over my thoughts and emotions. I began by saying aloud something simple like this: Abba Father I belong to you. I believe in you Jesus Christ. I love you with all my heart, my soul, and my spirit. My life is not done.
But it was hard work! I could feel the battle inside me, the darkness did not want to let go. So I said out loud with real authority, “I command this spirit of fear to let go of me right now. I take authority over you in the name of Jesus Christ.” And I began to experience an inflow of God’s light.
Then I began to sing simple songs like, “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back. The world behind me, the cross before me, no turning back, no burning back.” And I opened my mouth and began to lift up the name of Jesus Christ, and the blood of Jesus Christ.
Shortly, I got up out of bed and could go back to my life.
How you can win the battle
The Bible tells us we can overcome fear “because of the blood of the Lamb, the word of our testimony, and not loving our life even to death.”
I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, … And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death (Rev. 12: 10-2).
Pray for revelation
We need to understand the power of the blood of Jesus Christ, the power of our own words, and what it means to not love our life even to death; i.e., the work of the cross in our daily life.
