New Zoom Groups: “Understanding Dreams”

Judith Doctor Dreams transformation spiritual encounters

I invite you to join our e-Study Group on understanding dreams, because we know the sense of blessing they will bring into your life. For over 40 years, my husband and I have listened to our dreams and benefited from God’s guidance and direction in them.

Contrary to what you may have been taught, we know that God still uses dreams to speak to humanity. But because of ignorance—or fear—those powerful, puzzling pictures that come in the night are being ignored.

Most Christians are ignorant of the scientific research validating the importance of dreams, the testimony of dreamers through the centuries, and—reaching farther back—the beliefs of the Early Church Fathers about dreams. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Tertullian (2nd C) believed God reveals Himself to people in dreams: “Almost the greater part of mankind gets their knowledge of God from dreams.”
  • Origen (3rd C) viewed dreams as an essential part of the way God reveals things to us, giving knowledge of the spiritual world through symbolic awareness.
  • Athanasius (4th C) was a brilliant thinker whose writings are considered to be authoritative by Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox theologians. In Against the Heathen he said that frequently during sleep, “The soul … imagines and beholds things above the earth, and often even holds converse with the saints and angels who are above earthly and bodily existence.”
  • Augustine (4th C) believed dreams were important for understanding both human psychology and people’s relationship to God.

Writings of the Early Church Fathers reveal that they continued the Apostolic tradition of valuing the dream as a way to hear from God. Ask yourself: Is there any place in the Bible that says God will no longer speak to us using dreams?

Yet most Christians today hold to a worldview that says valid knowledge can only be attained through our senses and rational reasoning (a view that went out with Newtonian physics). In other words, we are unable to know God’s voice for ourselves.

They ignore what St Peter said at Pentecost:

“In the last days,” God says, ‘I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams’” (Acts 2:17).

Everywhere we look we know something has gone really wrong—floods, famine, disease, earthquakes, political confusion & strife—but we don’t know what to do. St Paul explains that we are living in the futility of our minds, darkened in our understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of ignorance that is in us and the hardness of our hearts (see Ephesians 4:17-18).

We must wake up, go to our Father and ask him to make his words known to us! It may startle you, but some believers suggest dreams, visions, and prophecies are “God’s language.” Rev. John A. Sanford even titled his book, Dreams: God’s Forgotten Language!

“Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you” (Proverbs 1:23).
