Read the Bible and Pray

Bible faith key

Life is not the same as it was before. Because of lingering side effects from my accident, there are times when it is easy to lose sight of the Spirit of Jesus within me.

A few days ago, I sat down and read the Bible for several hours, just reading it, not trying to study it intellectually.

Then suddenly, when I came to Romans 8, my spirit filled up and I began to sob from deep within. Tears flooded my eyes and flowed down my face, but they were tears of peace and joy, not of anguish or suffering.

However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. …

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you (Romans 8:9-11).

I am so thankful that we can go to the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to witness in our hearts to its truths once again. I know that the Spirit of Jesus lives within me, and because of this, I know that the Spirit of God will continue to guide me in the path of peace.

What can we do?

Ralph Nault writes: “We are living in a very disturbing time. Some folks are overloaded, others have nothing to do. It seems like our whole life has gone haywire, out of control. We are dealing with the unknown and we don’t know how to handle it. When we have a whole nation disturbed like this, what can we do?

“A number of years ago my father retired from work. As a heavy smoker for many years, he had emphysema of the lungs. He had some very difficult days. He could not lie down because his lungs would fill, so he sat up all the time. Afraid of drowning in his sleep, he would not sleep for a long period of time.

“My father would have my stepmother call me to come and say some words over him. I would go with my Bible and sit by him and read it. Very soon he would relax and go to sleep. He would sleep for many hours, then wake up feeling much better.

The power of the Bible

“The Bible is not Jesus, but it points the way to Him. The Bible is a very powerful book; it strengthens and encourages us to press on in difficult times. It often gives us answers to life’s challenges.

“Our problems are not going away in a day or two; we are in for a time of stress and difficulty. So no matter how busy you are, I encourage you to spend time in God’s word and prayer every day. It will make a difference.”
