Christianity is relational; everything hangs on this. The ability to relate is essential in Christianity—this involves our relationships to God, to others, and to ourselves.
Growth and recovery involve learning how to live out these relationships. God becomes visible, we are strengthened, and life flows in our relationships and in our own lives.
The one who loves his brother abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes (1 John 2: 10-11).
Quotes
- We learn best by our own experiences, not only by having things happen to us, but from reflecting on what happens, both alone and in exchange with others, so that the meaning of our experiences become clear. – Alice & Walden Howard, Exploring The Road Less Traveled
- We become fully conscious only of what we are able to express to someone else. We may already have had a certain inner intuition about it, but it must remain not clear so long as it is unformulated – Dr, Paul Tournier, Meaning of Persons.
- No one knows their thoughts well until they share them with another. – Dr. Morton Kelsey
- We are always in the dark about our own personality. We need others to get to know ourself. – Dr. Carl Jung
- We need someone to help us understand ourselves, to be honest to ourselves, not to lie, and to get real, to bounce things off of others. – Unknown
Benefits of working together in a small group
- A safe place to talk, explore our issues, correct, fix, heal, and recover.
- Opportunity to share experiences, admit problems, pain, and understand each other. We find it’s okay to be broken and honest about who we are; it is normal to be wounded.
- A safe environment to have someone to confess our sins and faults to, and to share our burdens with others.
- Offers us a chance to receive and give mutual support. It helps us realize the full extent of what happened to us.
- Opportunity to give and receive feedback and act as a mirror for others.
- Provides validation, affirmation, and safety.
- Offers love and nurturing care.
- Gives us a place to benefit from the reactions of others via affirmation, listening, dialogue, and feedback.
- Enables us to see how others think and feel in similar situations.
